WELCOME TO THE 2019 MAGAZINE ACADEMY AWARDS, BRINGING TOGETHER THE BIGGEST NAMES IN THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY, WITH THE VERY BEST STUDENTS ON ACCREDITED COURSES.

 

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO HAVE YOUR MAGAZINES AND JOURNALISM, DIGITAL OR PRINT, JUDGED BY THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY MATTER - EDITORS AND PUBLISHERS. OR, TO THINK OF THEM ANOTHER WAY, POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS.

JUDGES WILL BE LOOKING FOR THE VERY BEST IN STUDENT PUBLISHING, BE THAT MULTI-CHANNEL BRANDS OR FEATURES. INNOVATIONS AND CREATIVITY MUST BE MIXED WITH COMMERCIAL ACUMEN. IF YOU HAVE AN ORIGINAL IDEA, GREAT WRITING, BEAUTIFUL DESIGN AND CAN PROVE HOW YOUR BRAND WOULD MAKE MONEY, THEN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMY WANTS TO SEE YOUR WORK.

ENTRY DETAILS:

BBC Worldwide Brand of the Year

In this category, we are looking for a full brand, which stretches across multiple platforms. This might be a digital-only brand or one with a print platform. This can be the work of an individual student, or it can be the product of teamwork.  

 

To enter you must provide:

 

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • A PDF of any finished print platform (if your brand has one). Please make sure you In Design files have been saved as spreads to help the judges read the magazine 

  • Magazines should not exceed 96 pages

  • Links to your digital platforms (i.e. links to the website / social media / YouTube)

BBC Worldwide Concept of the Year

This is for students who have a great idea for a new brand, but have not produced a full brand as part of their coursework.  Your concept might be for a consumer, special interest, customer, B2B or free magazine. This can be the work of an individual student, or it can be the product of teamwork.  

To enter you must provide:

EITHER

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • A flatplan for one issue

  • A cover for your launch issue (please ensure that any In Design files are converted to PDF first)

  • A full contents list

  • At least one sample feature

  • Evidence of future planning for the brand (i.e. a second cover, a future features list or a second flatplan). 

OR
 

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • A link to your website homepage and to any digital material you want to show us

  • Links to your social media / YouTube

  • A full contents list of what you have produced so far

  • A future features list

BBC Worldwide Feature Writer of the Year

In this category we are looking for a shining example of individual journalism produced for a magazine brand or on your course. This can be digital, multimedia, a designed spread, a straight Word document – it can be anything as long as it is all your own work and is journalistic (shows a high degree of original research and interviewing and not just written from Wikipedia research).

You must provide:

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • A link/document of the feature you wish to submit

BBC Worldwide Sports Feature of the Year

In this category, we are looking for a shining example of individual sports journalism produced for a magazine brand or on your course. This can be digital, multimedia, a designed spread, a straight Word document – it can be anything as long as it is all your own work and is journalistic (shows a high degree of original research and interviewing and not just written from Wikipedia research).

You must provide:

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • A link/document of the sports feature you wish to submit

BBC Worldwide Interview of the Year

In this category, we are looking for a shining example of a profile interview produced for a magazine brand or on your course. This can be digital, multimedia, a designed spread, a straight Word document – it can be anything as long as it is all your own work and is an in-depth interview with an interesting interview subject (note: the interview subject need not be well known or famous, but there must be a strong editorial reason for interviewing them).

You must provide:

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • A link/document of the sports feature you wish to submit

BBC Worldwide Social Media Campaign of the Year

In this category, we are looking for a shining example of a social media engagement that has increased reach and engagement and helped to grow an audience. It can be a multi-channel approach, or just focus on one key platform, but you must demonstrate an impact for your brand and that your audience reach has increased. 


To enter you must provide:

 

  • The completed entry form, which can be found here

  • Links to your social media 

  • Links to the digital platforms of your brand

  • Evidence of impact through analytics

IMPORTANT NOTE: 

A £10 entry fee is required for each student that is entered (therefore if you are on a magazine team with eight people, the fee is £80). Once the entry deadline has passed, we will invoice all participating universities for the amount owed for their entries. It is up to each university whether they cover the costs, or ask their students to do it. Any entry that does not pay the required entry fees will be withdrawn. 

CLOSING DATE:  Tuesday, 27th August, 2019
 

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY:

 

  1. The Magazine Academy is the competition organiser. The Magazine Academy is not the competition publisher and all rights remain with the entrants and/or the University/College.

  2. Entrants must pay due regard to copyright law, clearance and related issues, and in particular to the provisions of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.  

  3. The closing date for receipt of entries is Tuesday, 27th August 2019

  4. Entries will be judged by an independent panel of judges appointed by The Magazine Academy. 

  5. The Judges will not consider - and reserve the right to disqualify - any entry that shows evidence of plagiarism or is in breach of paragraphs two and three.

  6. The Judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into concerning the final choice of the winners.

  7. The Magazine Academy reserves the right to distribute the prizes in whole or in part if in the sole opinion of the judges the standard of entries so warrants.

  8. Invitations to the Awards event will be issued through the University or College. It is the responsibility of students to contact the lead tutor for details for the evening.  

  9. Entries cannot be returned.
